Write and Optimize PostgreSQL Queries Faster in VS Code with Copilot
The Visual Studio Code team presents a practical path from an application requirement to reviewed PostgreSQL queries, using editor tooling and GitHub Copilot assistance.
From SQL authoring to query review
The workflow combines the PostgreSQL extension’s IntelliSense and database context with GitHub Copilot to support several stages of query development:
- Write SQL: Use the extension’s authoring support and Copilot to help draft queries.
- Understand queries: Ask Copilot to explain SQL before reviewing or changing it.
- Analyze and improve: Use Copilot assistance to examine queries and suggest improvements.
- Run and inspect: Execute queries and inspect their results within VS Code.
- Export data: Export query results without switching out of the editor.
The emphasis is on moving from a requirement to reviewed SQL faster—not handing over responsibility for the final query. The developer remains in control of reviewing and accepting changes.
