Migrate to Azure SQL. Then Build Something New
Amit Khandelwal demonstrates an end-to-end migration of a working app from SQL Server to Azure SQL Database Hyperscale, using SSMS assessments and VS Code tooling to evaluate readiness, address blockers, and execute a BACPAC-based move. He also shows GitHub Copilot helping resolve a Service Broker issue and validating the cutover.
Overview
The video follows a working application migration from SQL Server to Azure SQL Database Hyperscale.
Assess readiness and plan the migration
- Uses SQL Server Management Studio (SSMS) migration assessments to:
- Evaluate migration readiness
- Investigate blockers
- Get recommendations for a target configuration
- Plan the move to Azure SQL
- Uses Microsoft SQL agent skills in VS Code to help with investigation and planning.
Resolve blockers with GitHub Copilot
- GitHub Copilot is used to help resolve an unused Service Broker configuration that was flagged as a migration blocker.
Execute a BACPAC-based migration
- Performs a BACPAC export/import migration.
- Notes an operational requirement for this approach:
- Stop writes during the export-and-import window.
Validate and switch the application
- Compares source and target row counts to validate the migration.
- Switches the application to use Azure SQL.
Build something new on Azure SQL
- Demonstrates capabilities including:
- Full-text search
- Vector search
