The Token Trap
Sindhura Bandhakavi walks through a common cost pitfall in agentic AI systems: optimizing for fewer tokens per call can lead to worse overall efficiency.
Overview
- Fewer tokens per request doesn’t automatically mean lower cost. If an agent is constrained too aggressively, it may lose context or precision.
- Agents can “make it up” with more calls. To reach the same accuracy, the agent may perform additional attempts or multiple tool/model calls, increasing total usage.
- Cost should be measured end-to-end. The practical metric is the total number of calls and total tokens consumed to achieve the required accuracy, not just tokens per single request.
