OpenAI’s GPT-5.1-Codex-Max Public Preview Release for GitHub Copilot
OpenAI’s GPT-5.1-Codex-Max model is now rolling out in public preview for GitHub Copilot, enhancing coding support and AI capabilities for developers.
Availability
The new model is available to Copilot Pro, Pro+, Business, and Enterprise subscription tiers. Users can access it in:
- Visual Studio Code (chat, ask, edit, agent modes)
- Copilot Chat on github.com
- Copilot Chat on GitHub Mobile (iOS and Android)
- Copilot CLI
Rollout is gradual. If the model does not appear in your environment, check back later as availability expands.
Enabling Access
- Enterprise and Business plans: Administrators need to enable the GPT-5.1-Codex-Max policy in Copilot settings. Once activated, organization members will have access through the Copilot Chat model picker.
- Pro and Pro+ plans: Users can select and enable the model from the picker, following a one-time confirmation prompt.
- Bring Your Own Key: Use the “Manage Models” option, select GPT-5.1-Codex-Max, and enter your API key.
